Temples in Penang are rich in decorative sculptures which coexist with Chinese mythology & symbolism.

The sculptures are made by:

porcelain shards, stucco & fresco

All these sculptures are originally made by craft masters from China.
Example of craft are in the form of :
dragon, phoenix , plants , animals & other figures

----------------------------------------------------------------
Dragon :
-one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.
- symbolizes benevolence, prosperity, longevity and the renewal of life.
-Ancient Chinese believed the dragon brought rain, good harvests and fertility.

Pheonix:
- a mythical bird known as the fenghuang
-symbolizes joy and peace.

Proposal and concept pitch

TOPIC:
Heritage Building, Architecture and Environment
--------------------------------------------------------

Concepts : The message and metaphor

------------------------------------------------
concept = "Chinese Mythology & Symbolism"
------------------------------------------------

message
To show ,explain & display images of Chinese mythology & symbolism in Chinese Temples of Penang

metaphor
The theme of the sculptures are about some Chinese history and mythology

Basically, my application is to show teenagers the aesthetic of craft that coexist with Chinese mythology & symbolism in chinese temples.
--------------------------------------------------------

TARGET AUDIENCE

Teenagers from age 17 to 28 .

I choose this age because teenagers at this age are not exposed to cultural & heritage of the temple's craft.

Most of the time, teenagers don't appreciate the art craft of the temple. They just walk in look around and leave.

FINAL DESIGN

Below is my selected poem :

"DREAMS"

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

POEM BY : Langston Hughes

______________________________________________________________

DREAMS

ARTIST STATEMENT:
The poem is about dreams.
Whenever u have a dream, go for it .
Whenever there's a chance, do not let go.

If we give up on our dreams,
it is as if we're a dead person with no ambition or goals.

It is worst than a beggar begging for money.

The metaphors:
---------------------
Snow
Barren field
Dead trees

The symbols:
------------------
Black hand
Glow
Shine from glow

"DREAMS"

POEM BY : Langston Hughes
______________________________________________________________

We must live our life to the fullest.
Keep make our dreams come true & don't let it go.

The author compares life with a bird.
Flying is a metaphor of freedom.
If we can't fly, we can't archive dreams.

A barren field frozen with snow
represent dead,empty or meaningless

This is what life is without a dream.

The author uses bird & a barren filed
to express the poem.

symbols & metaphors

______________________________________________________________

Symbolism
______________________________________________________________

A type and movement in poetry, it describe thoughts and feelings
in not a direct way; by using representations & signs.

Usage of colors,seasons, words, characters,
actions, or other things that are representative
are use in a poem to show symbolism.

FOR EXAMPLE:

---------------------------
the cross
can represent suffering & christianity.

Winter represents aging, decay, and death;
spring represent energy, birth, and hope;
summer is symbolic of childhood, fun, and laughter;
autumn stands for maturity, wisdom, and fulfillment.

______________________________________________________________

Metaphor
______________________________________________________________

A metaphor is a comparison made between two unlike things that actually have something important in common.

FOR EXAMPLE:
---------------------------

Joy

Just when you thought

that winter

would be here forever,

that it could never end,

you saw:

Amidst the frozen white,

a tiny tip of green,

first blade of grass,

the messenger of spring.

Poetry

An arrangement of words containing meaning and musicality.

Most poems take the form of a series of lines separated into groups called stanzas.
A poem can be rhyming or nonrhyming,
with a regular meter or a free flow of polyrhythms.
There is debate over how a poem should be defined,
but there is little doubt about its ability to set a mood.

______________________________________________________________

A poem is identifiable by its literary and musical elements.

For example,

metaphor and alliteration are common in many poems.

A poem can contain any number of features.
Usually a poem is broken down into lines and stanzas.
They can contain full sentences or just fragments, or a combination.
A poem can be happy or sad, simple or complex, traditional or rebellious.

______________________________________________________________

The benefits of a poem often begin where those of prose leave off.
A poem can stretch the rules of grammar a bit more, using inventive
line breaks or punctuation to accentuate a phrase

How to find meaning in a poem ?

______________________________________________________________

This guide enables me to understand the types of poem i'm searching.

______________________________________________________________

1.

Read through the entire poem.
Just take a minute to read it

Listen to how the words flow together.

2.
Read each sentence by itself.
Sometimes a sentence will flow over onto the next line.
Instead of looking at it as the poem is written, read each sentence individually.

You may be able to start piecing ideas together.

3.
Consider the deeper meaning.
Don't take everything at face value.
Ask yourself what else the phrase could mean.

4.
Understand the poet.
Take some time to read a little about the poet.
-If they seemed to be a romantic, then their poem may have more to do with love.
-If they seem to indulge in historical facts, they may have been trying to be satirical.

You may also want to read some of their other poems just to get
an idea of what kind of topics are common in their works.

5.
Identify the time period.
Poets tend to write about things that are happening around them.

Knowing a little more about when the poem was written can definitely assist you in truly learning the meaning of the poem.
